Official Kings County certificate information and application options. Follow the county’s instructions for the copy type and request method you need.
Official county instructions for obtaining a new marriage license. Online application entry alone does not issue a license or replace the required appearance; confirm the license type, documents and visit arrangements.
Before you start
- Availability · New marriage license — standard in-person application
- While the marriage license application can be started online, both parties MUST be present in our office in order to complete the application process. [14]
- Appointments · County-provided marriage ceremonies
- Marriage ceremonies are performed by the Clerk/Recorder on Thursdays by appointment only. [15]
For an office filing, complete the online application and then appear to sign and pay. Mail filing requires a paper form, payment and identity affidavit. An online application alone is not the completed filing.
Before you start
- Availability · Online preparation for an office filing
- After online preparation, the owner, member or officer must visit to sign and pay. [29]
- Information & documents · Mail filing
- Mail the downloaded form with payment and an identity affidavit. [30]
- Deadlines · Initial filing — state deadline
- File within 40 days after starting business under the fictitious name. [16]
- Eligibility & access · Where to file — principal place of business
- File in the county of your principal California business location. If you have no California business location, file in Sacramento County. [17]
- Deadlines · New or changed filing — newspaper publication
- Start publication within 45 days after filing. Use a qualifying newspaper in the filing county, or an adjoining county if no qualifying newspaper exists there. [18]
- Information & documents · Newspaper notice — publication frequency
- Publish once a week for four successive weeks. [19]
- Deadlines · After publication — file the affidavit
- File the publication affidavit with the County Clerk within 45 days after publication is completed. Check whether your newspaper files it for you. [20]
- Deadlines · Expiration — earlier changes or abandonment can end the statement
- A statement generally lasts five years, but changes or abandonment can end it earlier. [21]
- Eligibility & access · No-change renewal — publication exception
- An unchanged renewal filed within 40 days after expiration does not need republication. Changes can require a new publication. [22]
- Information & documents · California principal business location
- Provide the street address and county of the principal business location. A registrant’s separate mailing-address rule does not remove this requirement. [23]
- Information & documents · Individual registrant — owner mailing address
- For an individual owner, provide the full name and business mailing address if different from the business address. Do not apply older blanket residence-address instructions. [24]
County instructions and referral for its Megabyte assessed-value portal. The county says the link provides values for the current tax year only; assessment appointments use the Assessor contact channel.
Official county outbound link to its Megabyte portal. Current-tax-year values only; no individual parcel result has been reviewed.
County document requirements, including first-page APN and situs, return details, paper format and original signatures. Recording-counter hours differ from the general office and certificate-request hours.
Before you start
- Information & documents · Real-property recordings — first-page APN and situs
- Place current APN(s) and the commonly known situs street name/number on the first page of a real-property document. The county says missing elements prevent recording. [38]
- Information & documents · Recording — paper size and supplement
- The county lists 8½-by-11-inch pages. If any portion is nonstandard size, the surcharge is $3 for every page. [39]
The county does not issue business licenses and directs city businesses to the relevant city. An FBN filing and any activity permits are separate; this statement is not a waiver of other approvals.
Fees
Fees are quoted only when a source document supports the amount and conditions.
| Service | Amount | Conditions & source |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage license — county-listed fee | $91.00per license | County statement does not distinguish license types for this amount. Ceremony and witness fees are separate.[11] |
| Civil marriage ceremony | $48.00per ceremony | Separate from the marriage license and certified-copy fees; confirm any conditions and the current total.[12] |
| Witness supplied for marriage ceremony | $15.00per witness | Separate from the marriage license and certified-copy fees; confirm any conditions and the current total.[13] |
| FBN — Initial statement — first business and one owner | $30.00per filing | First business name and one owner. Effective date is not stated.[26] |
| FBN — Additional business name or owner | $8.00per additional name | Additional business or owner names. Effective date is not stated.[27] |
| Recording — nonstandard page-size supplement | $3.00per document page | Supplement applies to every page when any portion of the document is not 8½ × 11 inches; additional to regular recording charges.[43] |
These are individual fee items, not a quote for your total. Other charges or exemptions may apply; confirm the total with the office.
