Order birth, death or marriage certificates (opens in a new tab)[3]Official instructions

Official online, in-person, mail and drop-box instructions, with distinct authorized and informational copies.

Before you start

Eligibility & access
You may obtain a certified copy (or copies) of a birth, death, or marriage certificate from the Riverside County Clerk-Recorder provided the birth, death, or marriage license issuance occurred in the County of Riverside. We issue two types of birth, death, and marriage records: 1) an Authorized copy and 2) an Informational copy. An Informational copy is not acceptable for any legal purposes. Please note that processing times for Vitals requests online and by mail may vary depending on application volume and operational needs. [26]
Availability
The Office of Vital Records also issues certified copies of births and deaths that occurred in Riverside County during the current year or previous year. To purchase a birth certificate, allow 21 days from the date of birth. For death certificates, allow 8 days from the date of death. Upon receiving birth and death records from the County of Riverside University Health System-Public Health, Office of Vital Records, Birth and Death Certificates are also issued by the Riverside County Clerk-Recorder for all years. Certificates from the Riverside County Clerk-Recorder are typically available within 4-6 weeks of the event. [27]
Appointments · In-person certificate orders
Keep your SST or order number. Schedule your appointment (Recommended) Make your selections. You will need your SST or order number to proceed. Plan your visit. Bring government-issued ID (for Authorized copies). Bring payment; we take credit card, check, money order, and cash. [28]
Information & documents · Birth certificates by mail
BY MAIL: When submitting multiple certificate requests at the same time, all requests must contain the completed sworn statement on the front of this application but only one request would require the notary statement. Any member of a law enforcement agency or a representative of a state or local government agency, as provided by law, who applies for a birth certificate conducting official business, is NOT required to provide the notarized statement below. (a) For an AUTHORIZED copy, complete the sworn statement in front of a notary public. (b) For an INFORMATIONAL copy, the sworn statement in section 5 on the front of this application and the notarized statement below are NOT required. [29]
Availability · Posted website notice — E-Vital online ordering only
The county posts an E-Vital maintenance notice ending “8:30 a.m. tomorrow, October 15.” No year is printed. Confirm E-Vital availability before ordering; other certificate channels have separate availability. [59]
Marriage license information and requirements (opens in a new tab)[33]Official instructions

Official county instructions for obtaining a new marriage license. Online application entry alone does not issue a license or replace the required appearance; confirm the license type, documents and visit arrangements.

Before you start

Appointments · New marriage license — standard in-person application
Appointments are recommended. [38]
Information & documents · New marriage license — standard in-person application

Information & documents · New marriage license — standard in-person application
The divorce paperwork does not need to be certified. A copy of a Minute Order IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. [40]
Start the public marriage license application (opens in a new tab)[34]Online service

Start the county-linked pre-application. Follow the county instructions to complete issuance; submitting information online alone does not make you married.

FBN / DBA filing instructions (opens in a new tab)[50]Official instructions

The county offers online, office, mail, drop-box and newspaper-assisted routes. Retain the order number and respond to processing messages. The page announces electronic certification; follow current order instructions for document delivery.

Before you start

Deadlines · Pending application follow-up
Complete the application and respond to processing correspondence within five business days to avoid voiding it. [53]

Do not submit duplicates; the county warns of delays and no refund for duplicate submissions. [54]
Deadlines · Initial filing — state deadline

File in the county of your principal California business location. If you have no California business location, file in Sacramento County. [42]
Deadlines · New or changed filing — newspaper publication
Start publication within 45 days after filing. Use a qualifying newspaper in the filing county, or an adjoining county if no qualifying newspaper exists there. [43]
Information & documents · Newspaper notice — publication frequency
Publish once a week for four successive weeks. [44]
Deadlines · After publication — file the affidavit
File the publication affidavit with the County Clerk within 45 days after publication is completed. Check whether your newspaper files it for you. [45]
Deadlines · Expiration — earlier changes or abandonment can end the statement
A statement generally lasts five years, but changes or abandonment can end it earlier. [46]
Eligibility & access · No-change renewal — publication exception
An unchanged renewal filed within 40 days after expiration does not need republication. Changes can require a new publication. [47]
Information & documents · California principal business location
Provide the street address and county of the principal business location. A registrant’s separate mailing-address rule does not remove this requirement. [48]
Information & documents · Individual registrant — owner mailing address
For an individual owner, provide the full name and business mailing address if different from the business address. Do not apply older blanket residence-address instructions. [49]
File an FBN online or prepare an office/mail application (opens in a new tab)[55]Online service
