Official public library system associated with Alameda County for browsing. Independent city library systems may also serve the county. Membership rules, branch service areas and every address in the county are not implied by this association.
Read this library system’s own card instructions. Online registration, physical-card activation, residence and youth requirements may differ; use the quoted local conditions below where provided.
Before you start
- Eligibility & access · Initial library card
- Getting a library card is free and easy for anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in California. [4]
- Information & documents · Children under 13 — form assistance
- If you're under 13, a parent or guardian needs to help with the form. [5]
- Availability · Card and eCard renewal
- Alameda County Library Cards and eCards must be renewed every five (5) years. You can renew your account in a few different ways: [6]
- Eligibility & access · Alameda-resident eCard duration
- In Alameda County? You can keep your eCard for 5 years, or switch to a Library Card for greater access. Either one can be renewed after that 5 years. [8]
- Eligibility & access · Other California residents — temporary eCard activation window
- Elsewhere in California? Your eCard is temporary and lasts 30 days. Use this time to switch to a Library Card. A Library Card is valid for 5 years and can be renewed. [9]
- Eligibility & access · Outside California — no AC Library card eligibility
- Outside California? You are not eligible for any AC library cards. [10]
- Information & documents · Physical library card — current California address identification
- In Person: Visit any AC Library location to get a Library Card. Bring one of the accepted IDs with your name and current California address, and we'll help you get started. [11]
- Availability · Card/account renewal in person, distinct from renewing borrowed items
- In-person at any AC Library location. You will be asked to provide your Library Card or identification. [12]
Choose the actual provider’s named branch and confirm its posted opening/contact arrangements before travel. Membership and special-card eligibility remain subject to the separate card rules; directory status widgets are not a CountyWiki live-opening guarantee.
Check the provider’s specific aids, request notice periods and branch/service-area conditions. Home delivery, interpretation and staff assistance retain their own eligibility and availability limits.
Before you start
- Accessibility · Named RF-listening-system locations and request to staff
- In addition, we have RF (radio frequency)-based assistive listening systems from Listen Technologies at the Albany, Castro Valley, Dublin, Fremont Main and Newark libraries. Simply let staff know if you would like the presenters to provide event or program audio through one of these systems. [16]
- Accessibility · Program accommodations requested at least seven days in advance
- If you require accommodations for a specific library program, please contact the library where the program is being held or message Accessibility Services at least seven (7) days in advance. [17]
- Accessibility · Extended Services card longer loan period for disability/mobility access
